Mondays and Thrusdays
9:00-11:00 am
One student: 4.8 year old Caucasian male student
I had observed him under the theory of Howard Gardner and his multiple intelligences.
The following are my observations according to a rubric I had made...
1. Linguistic and verbal intelligence: good with words
2. Logical intelligence: good with math and logic
3. Spatial intelligence: good with pictures
4. Body/movement intelligence: good with activities
5. Musical intelligence: good with rhythm
6. Interpersonal intelligence: good with communication
7. Intrapersonal intelligence: good with analyzing things
8. Naturalist intelligence: good with understanding natural world
Verbal Linguistic
Verbal Communication
Student 2: Proficient – My student is able to communicate with his peers with good structured sentences but are often jumbled up the words and makes him confused with what is going on. My student often stops when talking and has a confused look and then starts over with what he is going to say.
Alphabet ABC
Student 2: Proficient/Advanced- My student can recognize all of the capital letters but has trouble with the capital letter U. My student can recognize most of the lowercase letters but has a little trouble with l and i, u and n, q and p, and b and d.
Writing
Student 2: Progressing/Proficient – My student has a little trouble holding a pencil correctly so he can be able to write his name. My student needs some guidance when holding a pencil so I had asked my student to press harder when he is writing his name and other words he may be writing, that way everyone is able to see his beautiful writing. My student can write his first name with help and recognizes his middle and last name, but can not write either.
Logical-Mathematical
---Patterning---
Student 2: Progressing/Proficient- My student was able to make a pattern by himself. When I had started the pattern my student did finish it in an interesting way. I put the pattern as Yellow, Blue, Yellow, Blue, ….. I had asked my student to finish it so he continued the pattern with Red, Green, Red, Green. My student was able to understand the pattern but I feel was confused that I had not put the other two colors available with the original pattern. Because I had not used the other colors available my student was a bit confused about what to do.
Counting 123
Student 2: Advanced- My student can recognize the numbers when asked to tell me what number was in front of him. Using the plastic magnetic numbers, my student was able to tell me what number it was when I had picked them up randomly from the basket. My student is able to rote count numbers 1 – 29. He can do this better when counting items with another person. My student was able to point to the numbers in front of him when he needed them. My student and I counted together and he was able to get up to 29 without a problem. By himself I believe that he can rote count to the number 20.
Problem Solving
Student 2: Progressing- My student is very aware of how many students are suppose to be in one area at a time, but my student has a hard time when a conflict comes up with another student and comes to a teacher when something is not right between the student and himself. The students need guidance of what to do about the situation. My student often gets upset if he does not have enough time to go to a particular center because of his time management it often does not let him get to what everyone else was doing.
Spatial
Creating
Student 2: Progressing/Proficient- My student has only built structures that were horizontal and is not aware to build things vertically. Although he often sees his friends build something vertically, he just is not interested.
Puzzles
Student 2: Progressing- My student will not do a puzzle by himself. But when a teacher is working with another student on a puzzle my student will come over and lend his expertise in what he can contribute.
Musical
Student 2: Proficient- My student enjoys singing the songs “Rise and Shine” and “The More We Get Together” and does this usually on a regular basis. But my student does not show any further reaction with the music that is playing in the background. My student can also play an instrument when he is asked to.
Bodily-Kinesthetic
Student 2: Progressing/Proficient- My student shows that he has a good sense of hand-eye coordination by throwing a beach ball to myself and some of his friends and hopping up and down like a bunny one both legs and one leg. But my student has a little trouble with fine motor skills such as holding a pencil, scissors, and being able to zipper his jacket.
Interpersonal
Student 2: Proficient- My student enjoys sitting with his peers during large group instruction time, but when it comes to the centers, my student enjoys playing by himself. Occasionally I see him with a couple of his “buddies” he tells me, but most of the time he is by himself.
Intrapersonal
Student 2: Progressing- My student does work with a couple of students if he has to, but does not always get along or realize that some one else is working in the area where my student is starting to help. I have observed that some times students do not want the help from the other people in the room and get upset very easily.
Naturalist
Student 2: Progressing/Proficient- Although I have not seen much of this area, I believe that my student does not enjoy interacting with the natural world and materials around him. My student really enjoys playing with blocks and things that are made of wood, but when it comes to playing outside and drawing with chalk my student had a hard time enjoying himself because he did not want to sit on the ground.

International School Observation
On Thursday October 15th, 2009 I had the opportunity to visit the International School in De Pere, WI. Going into the school, I really had no idea what to expect. We first had met with the Head of the School, Mr. Way. He explained the general information about the International School and answered any questions we had at first.
Next we were able to observe in a classroom setting. This classroom setting was a Kindergarten classroom with their teacher Mrs. Clifford. Walking into to this classroom, I immediately came to a decision that I had liked the classroom a lot. This classroom consisted of 12 students (7 girls and 5 boys). All of the students were separated into three separate groups and working on word work. But each of these groups were working on words in a different way. One group was working with word puzzles and then writing the words on a sheet of paper. Another group was finding the letters of the words; putting them in the correct spot of the booklet they were working on and then recopying the word. The last group was putting 3 different cards together to make one word. This group was working with Mrs. Clifford. Mrs. Clifford would go around to each student and have him or her say the sounds of each letter that makes up the word and then say the word. After the student has said all of the words put together these students were able to write their words on a sheet of paper also.
In the classroom setting, I have also observed students sitting down for a circle time and reading a book. The students all sat on the carpet and answered questions that Mrs. Clifford had while reading the story. Mrs. Clifford gave each student a chance to answer at least one question. I also saw a different management style in the classroom. Not once in the time I was observing did Mrs. Clifford raise her voice. I also noticed that the children were not given an expectation of how to sit and it did not seem to bother Mrs. Clifford unless it bothered one of the other students in the room.
The last area of observation was in the playground setting. The International School for the older students uses the playground kitty corner to the school. The students have recess before they go to lunch instead of after lunch, which I thought, was interesting. The Kindergarten students also went outside with one or two other grade levels. The recess helpers would walk the students across the school. The students would line up on the sidewalk. When the recess supervisor would blow the whistle, all of the students would go and run to play. It was interesting to see what the children would play with because the only playground equipment available to these students was the swings. The students had brought out balls and cones also. Most of the boys would play a game of football that had lasted the entire time they were outside, and the girls would be scared and used their imagination by playing in small groups. When it was time for the students to go back inside the school, the students all had to run a lap or two around the park and then line up.

Week One Observations
September 10, 2009
9:00- 11:00 am
Observation: Classroom and Non-structured
Today was my first day at the Children's Center. I really did not know what to expect. As the children were arriving, they were to hang their things on their hook in the hallway and then find their own name on the table press the EASY button and put their name into a slot. By each child seeing their name and recognizing it showed Miss Bonnie that they are learning the basics about preschool. There were 12 students, 3 girls and 9 boys.
After finding their names, it was circle time. During circle time, the children sang their "welcome to school " song and learned about forte and piano. The children were able to sing their song in three different ways: normal voices, loud voices, and soft voices. After singing the song, the children listened to Miss Bonnie read them a book called Rude Giants. This book was about manners. The children were able to collaborate with one another coming up with different ways someone can show GOOD manners and also BAD manners.
The children were then able to have a free choice time in which they could navigate to whatever center they wanted to. The children's choices included: Reading corner, Dramatic play, Block/Lego building, Writing, Computers, Science Table, Painting, Art Table- Necklace making, Snack, Rice Table and the hands on table. There were many options that the children were able to pick from and for the day, it was their choice as what they wanted to do. Each center was used during one time or another.
The Reading corner was used with children looking at books and then another pre-service teacher read a book to several students because they wanted her to. The Dramatic play area was used as a dress up area, and setting up a dinner table set up to share with friends. The Block and Lego area was used to build several building and a train track used from one of the blocks was a "train". The Writing center, I saw was being used to write a letter to their parents, but instead of writing there was a picture and the child's name. The Writing center was also used as writing the capital letters of the alphabet. The Computers were used with a Nick Jr. program. The Science table was really popular, today the students were able to measure water and pour it into different sized tubes. During this process I was able to ask some of the students questions as if they think the water in a fatter tube would fit into another tube. The children did not know, but after pouring into another tube the children were able to see that it did not fit and overflowed. The children had a lot of fun at this center. Another center was Painting, it was fun to see the different abstract paintings the children came up with. The Art table was used to make necklaces. I thought that this would be more popular, but only a few students chose that option. Another center was Snack, all of the children were excited about snack. The Rice table and hands on table were the last few centers, the children were able to work with their hands which is really important especially at their age.
After the different centers, the children had come back to circle time and read another story about manners and sang their departing song.
